It’s such an obvious one, but The BBC really does have everything you need if you want to improve your knowledge of gardening.
We highly recommend combing these three formats:
The accompanying Gardeners World magazine is also wonderful. We recommend taking a years subscription and then re-using them month by month again next year. It really helps you get into a seasonal rhythm.
We watch Gardeners World every single week for inspiration and simple demonstrations. The “jobs for the weekend” creates a really useful structure for your year.
We record and save the episodes so we can refer back to specific demonstrations (e.g. when he hard pruned his pleached Lime hedge) after they are no longer available on iPlayer.
NOTE many of the jobs can take a lot longer than it seems to take Monty and the team, don’t forget they have a team behind the scenes helping prep, and as with many jobs at least half of the effort is in the setup, prep and tidying up again afterwards. Planting a brand new bed for the first time can take hours if it’s full of leftover building rubble, but bit by bit the beds get easier to handle and after a while popping in a new plant will be as easy as it looks for Monty. So give yourself time and don’t rush or stress.
